Let's say you are baking. A recipe makes 24 cookies, but you need 48 cookies. In this case, you must double the recipe.

How do we double a recipe? In this unit, you will learn that to "double" something means to multiply it by 2.

You could mix and bake a batch of cookies and then start over to mix and bake a second batch. However, it is usually much easier to double a recipe in order to double the number of cookies.

Remember, the recipe makes 24 cookies. But, what if you only need 18 cookies? You do not want to waste ingredients to make extra cookies. How do you do this?

Why is this important?

Well, the ingredients for the cookies cost money. You do not want to waste money on cookies you do not need. Using a math problem will tell you exactly what ingredients you need to make 18 cookies.
