Let's say you are buying ribbon to wrap gifts. You have 10 small boxes to wrap and 3 large boxes to wrap. Each small box takes 15 inches of ribbon. Each large box takes 35 inches of ribbon. How many inches do you need in all?

You can say to yourself, "10 small boxes at 15 inches of ribbon each, plus 3 large boxes at 35 inches of ribbon each, equals how many inches of ribbon?"

The words "at," "plus," and "equals" are all clues that will allow us to write the following math problem, (10×15)+(3×35)=x inches of ribbon .

10 small boxes at 15 inches of ribbon each, plus 3 large boxes at 35 inches of ribbon each, equals how many inches of ribbon?

Why is this important?

It helps to know exactly how much ribbon you need. If you buy too little ribbon, you will need to make another trip to the store. If you buy too much ribbon, you will spend money on ribbon you do not need.
